Only one race left in the series and the chance to catch up on the leader. Don't forget that the worst result will be a drop.

Six participants for the CVSYC women's race

Six tenaceous women, proud and persitant assured the success of the first CVSYC women's race which was held Saturday August 21st in the afternoon, despite the inclement weather.

The starting line was at the B bouy and the course led the racers to the bouys C, HD 106 and B (about 5 miles)

It was Corinne at the tiller of Born to Run who won the race by crossing the line after 2 hours 17 minutes and 15 seconds.

Marie-Ève, at the tiller of La Piaule had an excellant race and finished second with a time of 2 hours 18 minutes and 52 seconds.

Starting in last place with a change in instructions from the officials as to the starting line, Anne at the tiller of Marinik II had an excellant race advancing up to second place before the last part to win third place with a time of 2 hours 20 minutes and 8 seconds.

The coast guard intercepted one of our racers in the 3rd Twilight Series Race

A Coast Guard boat intercepted one of the CVSYC racers at 8:30 Wednesday August 18th, right in the middle of the race in order to advise of the regulation to have navigation lights illuminated while underway after twilight.

The start of the race was at 7:00 PM with the wind coming from the West at about 10 knots. The course was set as S - C - E - C.

Born to Run was the first to round the first buoy (C) in 23 minutes. The run from C bouy to E was relatively fast, underlined by a furious battle between Allure who hoisted his spinnaker and El Sol Nasciente who managed to pass Allure after having given up a few lengths at the employment of the spinnaker.

The beat back towards C was marked by a constant battle between Defiant III who had a difficult start and Born to Run who had led the race for the most part. The wind decreased with the setting of the sun, so that the beat took more time. Defiant III was the first to cross the finish line in 1 hour 57 minutes and 20 seconds, followed closely by Born to Run with a time of 1 hour 58 minutes and 12 seconds.

El Sol Nasciente was the third boat over the line (2 hours 0 minutes 54 seconds) followed by Allure (2 hours 8 minutes 38 seconds)

Following the disqualification of Born to Run for not having navigation lights in order, and a higher handicap for Allure (who used a spinnaker and will have the same handicap for the rest of the series) it is El Sol Nasciente who gains the well earned second position , with Marinik II in third place (2 hours 9 minutes 55 seconds)

Shcubert II and Youp finished in 2 hours 15 minutes 40 seconds and 2 hours 18 minutes 53 seconds.

Final placing:

Defiant III

El Sol Nasciente

Marinik II

Allure

Schubert II

Youp

« Born to Run » wins the Anniversary Race August 14th

Underneath the critical eye of Commodore Normand Prévost, the CVSYC Aniversary Race was held Saturday August 14th, under sunny skies and a South wind of 10 to 12 knots.

Born to Run was the first boat to cross the starting line and held on to the lead throughout the course ( B - G - S x3, with the start at C) The leader took 33 minutes to complete the first lap, and 30 for the other two laps, for a total time of 1 hour, 30 minutes, 52 seconds.

El Sol Nasciente was the second boat to cross the finish line, with a time of 1 hour, 34 minutes, 25 seconds.

Marinik II and Youp battled for second place (with the handicaps considered) with Marinik II prevailing (1 hour 36 minutes 19 seconds) followed closely by Youp (1 hour 36 minutes 32 seconds)

Save the race! Special note to the English members of our club. Is anyone reading this English version that I am working hard to translate on a prompt basis ?? Please let me know. Peter McDougall

The wind is right on time for the second race of the series !

Even though the racers and the officials never thought that there would be any wind for the race, the starting signal for the 2nd Twilight Series sounded at 7:00 PM despite the calm stillness on the lake.

The 6 boats participating took the slow start on the course set as C - S, x 2. Captains and officials were so convinced that there would be no race, that up to 6:45 some of them were enjoying a refreshing swim in the lake among the boats. A swimming race instead of a boat race.

Then, a miracle! At 7:02 a light breeze developed and the 6 boats slowly gained a little speed, led by Born to Run who turned the first bouy in 19 minutes.

Throughout the race, which lasted one hour, the wind started from the WNW and followed from the E and then S.

The wind continued to increase in force, permitting the leader, Born to Run to finish the second leg of the race in 23 minutes as compared to 32 minutes for the first leg (total time of 55 minutes, 15 seconds)

The third boat to cross the line was Defiant III (59 minutes, 40 seconds) who made a spectacular advance through the fleet after having started the race dead last. He then ceded the crossing of the line to El Sol Naxciente (59 minutes, 21 seconds) at the very end of their battle.

The three other boats that completed the race, in order, were Allure, Youp and Schubert II.

Twilight Series Race #1

Born to Run won the first race of the Twilight Series, Wednesday night, August 4th. followed very closely by Defiant III.

Only the keen and brave sailors came to the club in the evening, after an afternoon of storms, strong winds, and thunder claps. By 6:00 PM the sun started to peek out, but the wind died. A very light breeze, sometimes from the south, sometimes from the west, finally convinced the committee boat to establish the course as C-Cad-S x2

Ten minutes before the start the lake was a mirror. Not a ripple! At 7:10 the racers crossed the start line, which was very difficult to do with the lack of wind. Miraculasely the wind gradually built up with the lead racer turning the C bouy in less than 15 minutes.

The 3rd position went to Youp, followed by Schubert II.

« Born to Run » wins the summer series

Born to Run has won the honours for the Summer Series in winning the 4th and last race on July 28th with a time of 1 hour, 27 minutes and 53 seconds. the race was contested under winds of 20 knots with gusts of 30 knots and more.

Schubert II crossed the start line first and was the first boat to turn the windward bouy in 12 minutes and 38 seconds. Schubert II was the only boat to have taken a 2nd reef, and it obvioulsy paid off on the windward leg.

The rectangular course (B E B S B) entirely situated on the line of the west wind forced the racers to work hard, especially on the long windward return from the E bouy to B.

Defiant III, winner of the previous 2 races was the second boat to cross the finish line, 2 minutes after the winner (with a time of 1 hur, 30 minutes and 40 seconds)

Schubert II and Youp finished in 3rd and 4th place respectivelywith times of 1 hour, 33 minutes and 6 seconds, and 1 hour, 33 minutes and 50 seconds.

Born to Run and Defiant II were tied for the series with two first places and two second place finishes each over the 4 races. The tie breaking procedure went to the second level (the winner of the last race) in order to establish Born to Run as the winner of the series. Bravo!

Summer Series Results

Tough fight for the honors

A real fight for the Taylor-Bailey trophy in this Summer Series is underway. Following last night's race, Defiant III is in the lead towards winning that wonderfull ship bells chime. But do not think that Born To Run will let it happen just like that. In fact, a victory by Born To Run in the next and last race will result in a dead tie between the two adversaries, and with the tie breaker being the result of the last race, Born To Run would become the winner overall.

Third place is just as close between Marinik II and El Sol Naciente. It will be decided by this 4th and final race of the series. But all this calculation could be in vain, as the unknown results could greatly affect the final standings. Among these close battles, two new participants, L'Héritage and Monterosso are beginning to make their prescence known and very soon will begin to be part of the honours in the results.

Defiant III wins the 3rd summer race

Defiant III has won the 3rd race of the Summer Series, held July 21st, with a very light wind of a few knots, which constantly changed from S to SW to W, under a sometimes menacing sky.

The course provided two battles, the first involving Defiant III and Born to Run who finished a mere 46 seconds behind the former. The second battle featured Schubert II and Youp who finished in 43 minutes and 22 seconds and in 43 minutes and 51 seconds respectively. El Sol Nasciente finished in 3rd place with a time of 36 minutes and 21 seconds.

The start occurred at 7:07, despite the menacing skies and the relative absence of wind during the supper hour.

For now, Defiant III is leading the Summer Series with two wins, followed closely by Born to Run.

Picture by Lily of Takali - no wind

« Defiant III » wins the second summer race

Defiant III won the second summers series race, July 14th in a very light NE wind?, completing the course in 1 hour 10 minutes and 3 seconds.

About the only boat to start on the burdoned port tack, Defiant II took 40 minutes to turn the windward bouy and 56 minutes to get to the gybe bouy. The other boats on the starboard tack were close together finishing 10 minutes behind the leader.

The original course was for three circuits, however with the very light breeze, it was shortened to 1 round.

Far behind the leader, two boats struggled for the second and third places with Born to Run finishing in 1 hour 19 minutes and 40 seconds and Marinik II in 1 hour 20 minutes and 30 seconds.

Picture taken by Lily of Takali - Defiant goes off in search of her own strategy

Fifteen sailors aboard six boats participated in a very novel race to promote new racers and beginners. Regular racing boats were prohibited from the race, however their captains could be selected as crew on the participating boats. Eddy on Moonlighting and Peter on Defiant II succeded in turning the windward bouy before the wind died and later on the race had to be cancelled with the lack of any wind at all.

A great idea nevertheless, and those boats that participated: Moonlighting, Defiant II, Tikali, Azul, O de vie, Kara II enjoyed the outing despite the disappointment of being unable to finish the race.

Clément Monet managed the skipper's meeting and the after race cocktail.

« Born to Run » Wins the honours of the first race of the Summer Series

Born to Run won the honours of the first summer series race, with a time of 1 hour 35 minutes and 30 seconds, followed by Defiant with a time of 1 hour 45 minutes and 50 seconds.

The course of WEWS was established with a SW wind of between 7 and 12 knots. Beautiful weather with the menace of a storm passing by.

A close battle between Youp and Marinik II was won by Marinik II.

El Sol Nasciente and Heritage followed accompagnied by Monterosso.

Bill Marshall race - Saturday July 3rd

Defiant III captured the honours of winning the race against cancer held July 13 in excellent weather and a SW wind of about 15 knots, with gusts to 30 knots.

Defiant III crossed the finish line in 1 hour 44 minutes and 19 seconds, followed by

Born to Run in 1 hour 45 minutes and 8 seconds who was brave enough to use his spinnaker in the strong winds.

Atlantis and Aspara of Oka finished 3rd and 4th.

Other boats finishing the race as follows: Marinik, Lézard'O, Carpe Diem, and Andrea B.

Results for Spring series

In every race, there is a winner and a loser. All merit the result depending upon the effort given, the perpetual attention applied, the strategy developed, the acquired experience, the persistence and several other factors such as the condition of sails and the hull surface. Some work much harder on these points than others, which pays off in giving them assured advantages.

Spring series - race 3 rerun of #3

Born to Run was assured of winning the Spring Series by finishing first in the 5th and last race of the series, on July 1st.

In 2nd place we find Jeitinho, who crossed the finish line less than a minute behind the winner.

For the second time in a few days, Héritage placed 3rd. Bravo.

All captains are invited to participate in the Summer Series which starts at 7:00 PM July 7th.

Sping series - race #4 (5)

Once again the duo of Born to Run and Defiant III dominated the 4th race of the Spring Series, on June 30th. They finished with the respective times of 1 hour 31 minutes 20 seconds and 1 hour 36 minutes and 43 seconds. It must be noted that the 2 boats took about the same time to complete each of the 3 tours of the course (30 and 32 minutes respectively) Good consistency!

The fine performance of Héritage is to be noted as they won 3rd place (in adjusted time) after completing the course in 1 hour 42 minutes, 20 seconds.

The advance in the race was made by Jeitinho by doing the 3 tours in 35, 32 and 32 minutes to cross the line in 3rd place. With adjusted time Jeitinho finished in 6th place.

The intermitant rain during the afternoon probably stopped certain usual racers from participating. The course (CBS x 3) was designed as a function of the west wind of 10 knots.

Spring series Race #4

The 3rd race of the season was held June 23rd and a long battle ensued between Youp and Marinik II, a battle of which the consequence was the ultimate success of Schubert II gaining 3rd place in front of Youp in 4th and Marinik II in 5th.

The course (WC Cad S CAD B) was set up for the WNW wind at the start, which later became WSW.

The leaders throughout the race were Born to Run and Defiant II which finished 1st and 2nd with times of 48 minutes 24 seconds and 49 minutes and 16 seconds.

But the level of competition between the following 4 boats was intense with only 1 or 2 seconds between Schubert II, Youp, Marinik II and Allure.

12 participants for the second race of the Spring Series

Twelve boats for the start of the 2nd race of the Spring Series June 9th, thanks to the arrival of 3 new participants, La Piaule, Brisant and Monterosso.

Pushed by a wind of 15 knots, Born to Run was the first to turn the windward bouy in less than 15 minutes, followed by El Sol Nasciente, Youp, Defiant III and Allure who all competed the race between 1 hour and 29 minutes and 1 hour and 30 minutes, behind the winner Born to Run, 1 hour and 24 minutes.

Second place went to Youp, despite a near miss with another racer whom we shall not name, followed in 3rd place by Defiant II.

A third group of Brisant, Carpe Diem, and Pinch crossed the finish line after 1 hour and 33 minutes.

Maranik II, La Piaule, and Habibti folowed the prossession, escorted by the majestic Monterosso.

The 3rd race ofthe Spring Series will be held Wednesday June 16 at 7:00 PM. As well, all members are invited to participate in the Rum Runner's race, Saturday June 12 (Skippers' meeting in the clubhouse at 9:30 with the start at 11:00.

Spring series 2010 Race 1

Race planning for our upcoming season of 2010

The Race Committe recently met in order to plan the coming season. They will be doing their best to try to involve as many members as possible in our races, while observing budget restraints. Racing, with the inherent emphasis on the fine tuning of sails and the carrying out of strategic manouvres, can become very interesting for those who wish to really improve on their sailing performance in a safe and seamanlike fashion.

We feel it is in the interest of the club to promote two sorts of races.

For those keen and experienced racers who are available on a regular basis, it is essential to continue the Wednesday night races to promote skilful sail tuning and boat handling.

For those who are not available every Wednesday evening to participate in series races, it is also important to continue to offer, and even to augment, the number of Saturday races with a less competitive starting procedure by using the pursuit start method.

There will now be five Saturday pursuit races, one of which will not allow the regular racing captains to have their boats in the race, and another restricted to having only women at the tiller. These races will be announced on the race schedule.

Other new items for 2010 season

Racing Officials Course

To succesfully run sailing races it is essential to have competent race officals to manage and supervise the races. We are therefore availing ourselves of the FVQ's offer to send two of our members to a formal Grade 1 course for racing officials. This will provide them with valuable knowledge which they will be able to impart to other members willing to help us out with the racing.

These courses will provide us with manuals which will remain in the club. Already François Trottier has signed up to follow the course.

Motivation for Saturday Races

According to past experience, Saturday races have been met with enthousiastic participation and interest, however, they often ended with little emphasis upon the performances and the results....... To improve this, it has been suggested to organize short de-briefing get togethers after the races to rehash successful manouvres, errors, or strategies followed. Remember, it is by our errors that we learn the fine points of sailing. These gatherings can be an important social mixing, with cocktails and finger food, at modest cost.

They will go far to promote a climate of companionship and advice, in the fine spirit of our club.

Sail and Rigging Fine tuning Clinic

The Racing Committee has decided to provide valuable advice to our members by offering a clinic on the fine tuning of standing and running rigging and of sails. This will take place at the beginning of the season, right after launching.

The clinic will be provided by an expert sailmaker with the view to aid novices and those that wish to improve the performance of their boat, as much for cruising as for racing.

This clinic will replace the course for officials and racing which had been scheduled for Wednesday the 28th of May, at the clubhouse.

Please refer to the calendar.

Renewal of racing buoys

The racing Committee has decided to buy a new inflatable buoy, to renew our stock which are in bad condition because of an inadequate inflating blower (hair dryer). We will purchase a proper blower made for the purpose. The new buoy will have the appropriate air cap and with the new blower we will be able to properly inflate our buoys to the required pressure so as to avoid damages to them and resultant leaks.

It has also been decided to install an permanent "A" bouy at Wanklin Point in the historic position. This will also act as one of our racing bouys as well as a target buoy for the channel passage from the bridge at Abbot Point. Peter has arranged to obtain this buoy at no cost from SLVRY.

Night race late in season for the diehards

I would not even try to translate the poetic description by Clément of the Wednesday night race a week later than the close of our racing season. There was so much satisfaction with the season of racing, that a large portion of the racers pleaded for an additional night of racing to finish out the season.

It was cold, there were gusts, some rain, but we all had fun.

Dye hards race results

Results of Saturday races

We had fewer Saturday races this year which is regretable since these are popular as an opportunity for new participants to enjoy.

Les complicated than the concurrent start lines of our Wednesday races, these starts are staggered to suit the handicap of the particular boat. That is, everyone starts at his or her time and there is no traffic at the starting line. THis offers a chance for all to adjust their sails and to concentrate on the boat ahead so as to overtake her and to move up the fleet. Very good practice for your technique that can be used in any outing so as to arrive at your destination in the quickest time.

With this show of interest, we will be organizing more Saturday pursuit races so as to invlove more members and perhaps to prick their interest in racing.

All that to put to rest the adage that sailing is the most expensive sport to go nowhere slowly. while avoiding the congested starting line of the Wednesday races.

2009 Wednesday night race results

Again this year the Wednesday night races were a succes with strong but friendly competition.

Several new participants joined in, however, sadly, they tended to drop off as the season progressed. Too bad, since with some persistance, everyone improves and gets the taste of learning more and more of the finer details of sailing and enjoying the comraderie of a fine bunch of sailors.

VENDÉE-GLOBE LAKE OF TWO MOUNTAINS 2009

In memory of Gerry Roof

This is our annual race to close the lake. It is a non-handicap race / cruise with an interesting start where we lower sails and raise them for the start.

Another glorious evening with sufficient wind to give all hands a lot of work to sail boats. An interesting course was laid out with a novel start deep in ïle Cadieux Bay. Born to Run, Jeitinho, Youp! and Defiant fought a long battle of two legs with close hauled, close reach and downwind sailing in brisk conditions.

They were followed by the group of Marinik II, Placebo, El Sol Naciente and Pinch, all working just as hard in the wind and waves.

Several times, boats met in close proximity, with proper observance of the rules of the road being exercised in every case.

Everyone enjoyed the fine evening as well as the the usual debriefing later on in the clubhouse.

We were honoured with the presence of Micheline, from Québec City, the former owner of Jeitinho who thoroughly enjoyed the race action on her old vessel.

Congratulations to son and father on their position of first and second.

Rum Runners Race results June 13 2009

With very little wind forecast, there was some discussion at the Captain's meeting as to the course, however the tradition of opening the lake with this race is important and it was resolved to try and race to the H98 buoy at St-Placide and back to CAD as usual.

Sixteen participating boats bobbed around the start line in a dead calm awaiting the Fleet Captain to start the race. We crawled downwind at a snail pace with a few very minor puffs of breeze. Even the use of spinnakers by some boats did not prove to be to any advantage as white sails overtook most of them. Born to Run, Marinik, Purr-fection, Defiant, Placebo, El Sol and Youp! had all their turn at the head of a very slow moving fleet.

The fatigue of fighting for some kind of progress led to some boats to abandoning the race in sheer despair.

Finally, the Fleet Captain announced the shortening of the race to turn around CNDM buoy H and return to the club.

Defiant turned the H buoy first in very close traffic with Born to Run, El Sol and Purr-fection. Fortunate to catch a good breeze, Defiant sailed off on the windward tack towards CAD, while those just behind stayed out of the breeeze long enough for a good lead to be opened up.

Although not an official Rum Runner Race because of the shortening, several boats persevered to the finish lin.

The top three finishers were Defiant, Born to Run and Placebo
